Right-handed reliever Brooks Wilson was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett by the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, marking the team’s first roster reduction of the spring. Wilson did not play in the first two exhibition games for Atlanta.
Wilson was added to the Braves’ 40-man roster this winter to keep him out of the Rule 5 Draft, which was later canceled due to the lockout.
Wilson pitched for Mississippi for the bulk of the 2021 season, appearing in 33 games as a reliever and logging 44 innings with a 2.45 ERA and 2.26 FIP.
He was promoted to Gwinnett late in the season, when he pitched six innings and struck out 11 batters while allowing one earned run.
Wilson might return to Atlanta in 2022, but the vacant roster spots have already been filled by Collin McHugh and Kenley Jansen.
According to Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com, Wilson underwent Tommy John surgery recently and will miss the 2022 season
He was signed to the 40-man roster this past offseason and has Triple-A experience, so the 26-year-old righty would have likely made his major league debut this season if he had stayed healthy.
He is now on the 60-day disabled list as a relief pitcher.
