William Woods has had a difficult two years. After being drafted in the 23rd round out of Dyersburg State Community College in 2018, there was speculation that the Braves had scored a steal in the later rounds.
Woods pitched in 20 games at the low-A level in 2019, starting seven and pitching 51 innings with a 3.35 ERA, 4.06 FIP, and 4.16 xFIP, a 10.24 K/9, and a 26.6 percent strikeout rate.
His control, with 5.12 BB/9 and a 13.3 percent walk rate, is a problem, as it is with several young pitchers.
Despite his flaws, Woods showed enough promise to crack the top 30 rankings for the Braves organization.
Then he gets hurt in 2021 and only pitches 10.2 innings. Woods had a 4.66 ERA, 7.90 FIP, and 5.39 xFIP in 9.2 innings for high-A Rome in four games.
He had a hard time missing bats, striking out 16.7% of batters.
William Woods did play in the Arizona Fall League and improved his performance. He pitched in six games, starting five of them, and had a 4.29 ERA.
Despite striking out 22.2 percent of batters, he still walked far too many (10.9 percent ).
Some scouts, though, continue to build a buzz around him.
Woods is an excellent thrower. He has a high-90s fastball and some good secondary pitches to complement it.
The problem is that he doesn’t always have complete control over the pitches. He must also figure out a way to miss even more bats.
