The Atlanta Braves selected Peabody graduate William Woods, a Dyersburg State player in 2018, in the 23rd round of the MLB Draft on Wednesday.
The 682nd overall choice went to Woods, the 2017 All-West Tennessee Baseball Pitcher of the Year.
Woods described the situation as “surreal.” “This is what I’ve been striving towards since I began pitching at the age of seven or possibly even earlier. It was a blessing to have my entire family here.”
Woods, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, said he spoke with a handful of other teams, including the San Diego Padres, but he needed more information.
“I wanted a bigger signing bonus, and the Braves gave it to me,” Woods said.
Woods signed his contract on Friday in Orlando, Fla., and will begin playing in the Gulf Coast League, a Florida rookie league, later this month.
“This is unquestionably the moment I’ve been looking forward to,” Woods remarked. “There are several feelings. From high school to college football to now, this has been a work in progress.”
Woods signed with UT Martin after high school, but he decided to transfer to a junior college before beginning his freshman year.
