William Contrera

William Jesus Contreras (born December 24, 1997) is a Venezuelan professional baseball catcher for Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves (MLB). In 2020, he made his main league debut on Opening Day with the Braves. Contreras signed his first contract with the Braves in 2015.

Contreras signed as an international free agent with the Atlanta Braves in February 2015. In 2015, he debuted professionally with the DSL Braves, hitting.314/.370/.413/.783 with 32 RBIs. In 2016, he hit.264/.346/.375/.721 with 1 home run and 8 RBIs for the GCL Braves.

In 2017, he hit.290/.379/.432/.811 with four home runs and 25 RBIs for the Danville Braves. He hit.285/.347/.436/.783 with 11 home runs and 49 RBIs while splitting the 2018 season between the Rome Braves and the Florida Fire Frogs. He hit.255/.315/.354/.669 with 6 home runs and 39 RBIs while splitting the 2019 season between Florida and Mississippi.

Following the 2019 season, Contreras was added to the Braves 40-man roster.

He was invited to the regular 2020 spring training as well as the summer camp held before to the shortened 2020 season’s opening day. On July 24, 2020, Contreras was activated and made his major league debut as a backup catcher.

His first professional hit and a run batted in occurred the next day as a pinch-hitter against Hunter Strickland. He went four for ten with a double and an RBI in 2020.

Contreras hit his first professional home run on May 5, 2021, against Washington Nationals pitcher Erick Fedde. In 2021, he will spend his time between Gwinnett and Atlanta. He hit.215/.303/.399 in the majors, with eight home runs and 23 RBIs. The Braves won the NL East with an 88–73 record and went on to win the World Series in 2021, earning them their first title since 1995.

Contreras was a backup catcher on the Atlanta Braves Opening Day roster in 2022, and he divided the year between Atlanta and Gwinnett, where he was anticipated to develop his catching talents.
