The Texas Rangers selected Travis Demeritte in the first round of the 2013 draft, but he was traded to the Atlanta Braves three years later for Dario Alvarez and Lucas Harrell.
Demeritte was the team’s 10th overall prospect at the end of the 2017 season and was expected to be a part of the reconstruction.
Then, during the 2019 season, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers for Shane Greene, along with Joey Wentz.
Demeritte made his major league debut with the Tigers in Detroit, appearing in 48 games and hitting .225/.286/.343 with three home runs.
He only received 29 at-bats for the Tigers the next season, and his performance was even worse.
Before the 2021 season, he was released by the Tigers and signed by the Braves.
He hit .285/.370/.588 with 22 home runs in 82 games for Triple-A Gwinnett last season.
With all of the issues in the Braves’ outfield last year, I was shocked Demeritte wasn’t given a chance, especially considering how well he hit at Gwinnett.
He had a chance to win a bench spot during Spring Training, but he didn’t receive it after only getting three hits in 16 at-bats (2 of which came in the same game), with only one walk and six strikeouts.
