Drew attended Etowah High School where he played baseball for the school baseball team. During his senior year, he led the team to win the Class 7A state championship title. After high school, he had wanted to play college baseball at the University of Georgia for the Georgia Bulldogs but he was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the second round of the 2017 MLB draft.
He signed with the Braves and received $1.5 million as a signing bonus. He began his professional career that year playing with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Braves.
