Cabrera, Justin Williams, and Roel Ramrez were traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for Tommy Pham on July 31, 2018.
Before being promoted to the Memphis Redbirds for the playoffs, he was assigned to the Springfield Cardinals.
He finished 8–9 with a 4.17 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 27 games (25 starts) between Montgomery, Springfield, and Memphis.
Cabrera was added to the Cardinals’ 40-man roster after the 2018 season. He started the 2019 season with the Memphis Grizzlies.
On May 29, 2019, he was promoted to the big leagues for the first time. In an eventual 11–4 Cardinals loss, he made his debut that night against the Philadelphia Phillies, tossing up five runs (three earned) over 3+23 innings, striking out five and walking two.
Before being moved to Memphis, he made one more start. On June 13, he was recalled to St. Louis once more, then on June 24, he was optioned back to Memphis.
On August 31, he was recalled to St. Louis for the final game of the season. Cabrera went 0–2 with a 4.87 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 20+13 innings thrown with St. Louis during the regular season.
Cabrera pitched to a 2.42 ERA with 32 strikeouts over 22+13 innings in a shorter 2020 season, improving his whiff percentage from 18.1 percent in 2019 to 40.3 percent.
Cabrera established himself as a vital member of the Cardinals’ bullpen in 2021, appearing in 71 games and going 4-5 with a 3.73 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 70 innings.
