Junior Fabio Fernández (born March 2, 1997) is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals.
In July 2014, Fernández signed as an international free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals.
That year, Fernández made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Cardinals, where he went 0-5 with a 5.79 ERA in seven games (six starts). He pitched in 11 games (nine starts) for the Gulf Coast Cardinals in 2015, finishing 3-2 with a 3.88 ERA. He also pitched in two games for the Palm Beach Cardinals, giving up one run over 6+23 innings.
Fernández began 2016 with the Peoria Chiefs[3][4] before joining the Palm Beach Cardinals in July. Between the two organizations, he has a combined 8-7 record and 4.06 ERA in 24 games (20 starts) in 2016.
Fernández returned to Palm Beach for the 2017 season, earning a spot on the Florida State League All-Star team after going 5-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 16 starts.
He returned to Palm Beach in 2018 and was later promoted to the Springfield Cardinals. Due to injuries, he missed almost two months of the season and was placed on the injured list twice. Between the two organizations, he was 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA in 24 bullpen appearances.
The 2019 season for Fernández began in Palm Beach.
In May, he was promoted to Springfield, then in June, he was promoted to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds.
He finished 3-2 with a 1.52 ERA in over 65 innings thrown for the three clubs this season, striking out 80 batters.
The Cardinals picked Fernández’s contract and promoted him to the major leagues on August 6, 2019.
On August 11, he made his major league debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates, conceding two runs in a third of an inning. He has a 5.40 ERA in 13 bullpen appearances for the Cardinals.
Fernández started the 2020 season with the St. Louis Blues. On August 4, 2020, it was revealed that he had tested positive for COVID-19, and he was placed on the injured list as a result.
During the season, he only pitched three innings.
