It was the Cardinals who selected Flaherty 34th overall in the 2014 MLB draft, despite signing an intent to attend letter of intent with UNC-Chapel Hill before his professional career began.
When Carlos Beltrán left the Cardinals to join the Yankees as a free agent, the team received a compensatory draft pick.
With a $2 million signing bonus, Flaherty joined the Cardinals organization on June 17th.
He began his minor league career with St. Louis’ affiliate in the Gulf Coast League, pitching for the Cardinals and posting a 1.59 ERA in 22.2 innings.
He went 9-3 with a 2.84 ERA in 18 starts for the Peoria Chiefs in 2015. Baseball America listed him as the Cardinals’ third-best prospect prior to the 2016 season.
He played for the Palm Beach Cardinals for the whole of the season. Baseball America ranked Flaherty in the top-100 for the first time this season, placing him at 88th in their mid-season rankings.
Flaherty’s record at Palm Beach was 5-9 with a 3.56 ERA in 24 appearances (23 starts).
During the 2017 season, Flaherty was promoted from the Springfield Cardinals to the Memphis Redbirds after having a 7–2 record and a 1.42 ERA in ten starts. In 1482 innings, Flaherty walked 35 and struck out 147.
Flaherty made his MLB debut on September 1st against the San Francisco Giants after being promoted from the minor leagues.
He threw four innings, allowing five runs and striking out six, although he didn’t have a decision in the team’s 11–6 victory.
Denard Span was the first hitter he faced and he got the first out of him. Flaherty was 0–2 with a 6.33 ERA in 21 13 innings of work in his final season.
