Brandon David Waddell, born June 3, 1994, is a professional baseball pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Waddell graduated from Clear Lake High School in Houston, Texas, and attended the University of Houston–Clear Lake.
He enrolled at the University of Virginia in order to play college baseball for the Virginia Cavaliers. Virginia advanced to the College World Series final round in 2014, and he started the must-win game 2, which Virginia won but then lost game 3.
Waddell finished from the University of Virginia in three years with a degree in economics thanks to his additional credits, and he has been accepted to the master’s program at Virginia’s Curry School of Education.
Waddell was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 MLB draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He agreed to terms with the Pirates and received a $315,000 signing bonus.
He made his professional debut with the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League’s West Virginia Black Bears, where he lasted the whole season, going 1–1 with a 5.75 ERA in six games.
In May, he was promoted to the Altoona Curve of the Class AA Eastern League from the Bradenton Marauders of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League.
Between the two teams, he threw to a combined 11–9 record with a 3.49 ERA. Waddell spent last season with Altoona, where he went 3–3 with a 3.55 ERA in 15 games.
