Paul Goldschmidt is an American professional baseball first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals who was born in the Delaware town of Wilmington. He grew up a devotee of the Houston Astros. David and Kim, his parents, met at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
His mother is a devout Catholic, while his father is a devout Jew. Goldschmidt was reared Catholic, as were his two younger siblings. His Jewish great-grandparents, Paul and Ilse Goldschmidt, and grandfather, Ernie (who currently resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida), fled Nazi Germany before the Holocaust in 1938.
