Edwin Diaz is a Puerto Rican professional baseball pitcher for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his major league debut in June 2016 with the Seattle Mariners.
During the 2012 Major League Baseball draft, the Seattle Mariners selected Daz from Caguas Military Academy in Caguas, Puerto Rico, with the 98th overall choice.
That year, he debuted in the Arizona League with the Mariners. He went 2–1 with a 5.21 earned run average (ERA) and 20 strikeouts in 19 innings in nine appearances (one start). He pitched in 2013 for the Pulaski Mariners of the independent Southern League.
He compiled a 5–2 record with a 1.43 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 69 innings of work in 13 appearances. As Baseball America’s fifth-best prospect heading into the 2014 season, Daz was a key member of the Mariners’ farm system.
With Jordan Pries, he was named the Clinton LumberKings’ Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Year during his time there.
During the 2015 season, Daz was a member of the Bakersfield Blaze and Jackson Generals. To cap off an impressive sophomore campaign, he was named the Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Year in 2006.
After six starts in the rotation, Daz was demoted to the bullpen in favor of Jackson.
