Andrew David Smith is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently plays for the New York Mets (MLB). Smith graduated in 2012 from Crowley High School in Crowley, Texas. He was 10-1 with a 1.90 ERA in 85 innings as a junior at Crowley in 2011.
He went to Dallas Baptist University and played college baseball for the Dallas Baptist Patriots after being undrafted out of high school in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. Smith pitched for the Patriots as a junior in 2015, with a 3-2 record and 3.97 ERA in 25 outings.
Smith was drafted by the Tigers in the third round of the 2015 MLB draft. He was assigned to the GCL Tigers for $575,800. Smith joined the Connecticut Tigers after one GCL appearance. In August, he was promoted to the West Michigan Whitecaps, where he concluded the season.
Smith went 3-0 with a 0.29 ERA in 31 bullpen innings for the three organizations. In 2016, he spent the entire season in West Michigan, finishing 1-2 with a 2.96 ERA in 35 bullpen appearances. [5] He started in 2017 with Lakeland.
Smith was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays on April 28, 2017, as the player to be named later in the Mikie Mahtook deal, which took place the previous day. From Lakeland to Charlotte to Durham to Montgomery to Binghamton, Smith made 42 relief appearances and posted a 4-4 record with a 1.65 earned run average in 42 outings.
