Jeff Hoffman was a pitcher for the baseball team of Shaker High School in Latham, New York. He pitched to a 7–0 win-loss record as a junior.
Hoffman led Shaker High School to its first Section II Class AA championship game since 2002 against local rival Colonie High School in his senior year. Hoffman struck out nine batters while pitching seven scoreless innings on 101 pitches.
His fastball averaged 82–83 miles per hour (132–134 km/h), making him unnoticed by collegiate baseball organizations in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I.
During the offseason, Hoffman threw in Connie Mack Baseball to gain attention from collegiate schools, where his fastball increased to 92 miles per hour (148 km/h).
As a result, he agreed to sign a letter of intent with East Carolina University (ECU), a Division I institution in Conference USA.
The Blue Jays sold Hoffman, José Reyes, Miguel Castro, and Jes Tinoco to the Colorado Rockies on July 28 in exchange for Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins.
Following the transaction, Hoffman was sent to the New Britain Rock Cats of the Eastern League. Hoffman began the 2016 season with the Albuquerque Isotopes of the Pacific Coast League’s Class AAA division.
