Farmer was converted to catcher when the Dodgers made the choice.

He began his professional baseball career with the Pioneer League’s Ogden Raptors in 2014, before being promoted to the Midwest League’s Great Lakes Loons later that year.

After hitting .310 in 57 games with Great Lakes, Farmer was moved to the California League’s Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, where he batted.238 in 36 games.

Farmer began the 2015 season with the Quakes, making the mid-season All-Star team. Farmer did not play in the game owing to his promotion to the Texas League’s Double-A Tulsa Drillers.

In 2015, Farmer was chosen to represent the Dodgers at the All-Star Futures Game.

Tulsa used him in 76 games and he hit.272. To begin the 2016 season, Farmer returned to Tulsa and was named to the mid-season all-star game.

In 2016, he appeared in 74 games for the Drillers, hitting.256 with five home runs and 31 RBI (RBI). After the season, the Dodgers added Farmer to their 40-man roster.

During the 2017 season, he was promoted to the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers.

On July 28, 2017, Farmer got promoted to the major leagues for the first time.

Two days later, in his first major league at-bat, Farmer hit a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the 11th inning against Albert Suárez of the San Francisco Giants, giving the Dodgers a 3–2 victory.

In 2017, Farmer played in 20 games for the Dodgers, mostly as a pinch hitter, and had six hits in 20 at-bats (.300).

He was a pinch hitter for the Dodgers in the 2017 NLDS and NLCS, getting four at-bats without collecting a hit.

Farmer participated in 24 games for the Dodgers in 2018, 22 of them at third base. In 68 at-bats, he hit .235/.312/.324 for a.235/.312/.324 batting line.
