Who Does Zack Short Play For?
Zack Short Plays for Detroit Tigers.
Just minutes before Monday’s MLB trade deadline, the Detroit Tigers traded outfielder Cameron Maybin to the Chicago Cubs for infield prospect Zack Short.
The Tigers weren’t obvious buyers or sellers at the deadline after winning five straight games against the Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins to move back to.500 last week.
Before the 4 p.m. deadline, reports surfaced that the Tigers had completed a deal.
After being drafted in 2005, traded for in 2015, and signed as a free agent this offseason, Maybin was on his third stint with the Tigers.
They’ve traded him three times, once for Miguel Cabrera in 2007 and again in November 2016 to the Angels.
In 14 games with the Tigers this season, he hit .244/.311/.415 with one home run and four doubles while drawing four walks and striking out 13 times.
Short is a middle infielder with a career slash line of .241/.377/.405 in 371 minor-league games. The 25-year-old is a 45-grade prospect who has above-average fielding, running and arm strength.
He isn’t regarded as a very good contact or power hitter, but his 261 walks in 371 games imply he has good plate discipline.
Short concluded the 2019 season with the Iowa Cubs at the Triple-A level, thus he’s only one step away from the Major League level. Given that Maybin will be a free agency in a month, that appears to be a good return for the Tigers.
