Roberto Perez is a Puerto Rican professional baseball catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball (MLB).
He previously played in MLB for the Cleveland Indians. He has won two Gold Glove Awards and two Fielding Bible Awards and was named the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year in 2019.
Eugenio Maria De Hostos High School in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, drafted Pérez in the 29th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft. He opted out of signing and went to Florida Gateway College instead.
The Cleveland Indians selected Pérez in the 33rd round of the 2008 MLB draft.
While playing with the AZL Indians in 2009, the Low-A Mahoning Valley Scrappers, and the Single-A Lake County Captains, he hit.313/.411/.431 in 55 games with a combined average of.431 in his professional debut.
Perez returned to Lake County in 2010 when he hit.217 with six home runs and 38 RBIs in 360 at-bats with the Lakes.
Pérez had a.225/.365/.310 slash line with two home runs and 30 RBI in the High-A Kinston Indians’ season in 2013.
While playing for the Akron Aeros of the Double-A Midwest League in 2012, Pérez had an impressive line of.212/.336/.293 with one home run and 31 runs batted in.
During the 2013 season, Pérez played for Akron and the Triple-A Columbus Clippers while suffering from bell’s palsy.
