Roberto Perez is a Puerto Rican professional baseball catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball (MLB).
On July 8, 2014, Pérez was promoted to the big leagues for the first time. Two days later, against the Yankees, he had his first major league hit.
Pérez hit his first professional home run off of Jim Miller of the New York Yankees on July 10, 2014. While Yan Gomes was out with an injury in 2015, he filled in as the team’s primary catcher.
The second part of the 2016 season saw Pérez reclaim Gomes’ role as the team’s primary catcher.
Against Rick Porcello of the Boston Red Sox during his first postseason at-bat, Pérez blasted an opposite-field home run, leading the Indians to a 5–4 victory.
Pérez hit two home runs in the Indians’ 6–0 victory in the first game of the 2016 World Series. Pérez recorded the second-most RBIs (seven), walks (seven), and home runs (three) of any Indian player in the 2016 postseason.
The Indians signed Pérez to a $9 million, four-year contract on April 2, 2017, with club options worth an additional $12.5 million for the seasons 2021 and 2022. He had a batting average of.207/.291/.373 in 2017.
