Marcus Andrew Semien is a Major League Baseball shortstop and second baseman for the Texas Rangers. He formerly played for the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, and Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball.
Semien grew up in El Cerrito Youth Baseball, across the water from San Francisco, pitching and playing infield, and was a part of the area’s All-Star teams.
After that, he proceeded to St. Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, California.
He hit .471 as a junior, .371 as a senior, and was chosen all-league three times at St. Mary’s, where he was drafted in the 34th round of the 2008 MLB draft by the White Sox.
Semien declined to sign and instead enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a member of the California Golden Bears’ baseball team.
Semien improved as a sophomore after struggling as a freshman, hitting .328. Semien was the team’s starting shortstop as a junior, but his .275 batting average hampered his draft stock.
Semien was drafted in the sixth round of the 2011 MLB draft by the White Sox. He began his professional career with the Kannapolis Intimidators in Class A in 2011.
In 229 at-bats, he hit .253 with 15 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 26 runs batted in (RBIs), and three stolen bases in 2011.
Semien was promoted to the Winston-Salem Dash’s Class A-Advanced team for the 2012 season.
He hit .273 with 31 doubles, five triples, 14 home runs, 59 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases in 418 at-bats. Semien was the White Sox’s #8 prospect for the 2013 season.
