Matthew Allen Peacock is an American professional baseball pitcher who currently plays for the Kansas City Royals. He formerly played for the Arizona Diamondbacks in Major League Baseball.
Saraland High School in Saraland, Alabama was Peacock’s alma mater. In his junior year of 2011, he had a 3.42 ERA while batting .440 hits and 32 runs batted in.
He was named to the All-State honorable mention team. He was not taken in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft and went on to play college baseball at the University of South Alabama.
Peacock redshirted his rookie year of 2013 and did not appear on the field. He made eight relief appearances as a redshirt freshman in 2014, going 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA.
He only pitched in three games as a redshirt sophomore in 2015. Peacock had surgery on his throwing arm in 2016, and he did not play that season, opting to work at his uncle’s sawmill instead.
In 2017, he returned to the mound and was promoted to closer. Over fifty innings, he finished 3-3 with a 2.88 ERA, ten saves, and 55 strikeouts in 25 bullpen appearances.
Following the season, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected Peacock in the 23rd round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft.
With the Hillsboro Hops, he made his professional debut, finishing 0-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 22 bullpen appearances.
Peacock started the 2018 season with the Kane County Cougars (where he was awarded a Midwest League All-Star) before being promoted to the Visalia Rawhide.
Between the two clubs, he threw to a 7-6 record with a 4.20 ERA in 28 games (16 starts).
In 2019, he pitched for the Jackson Generals, posting an 8-4 record and 2.97 ERA in 21 games (twenty starts).
Due to the termination of the minor league season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Peacock did not play a minor league game in 2020. After the 2020 season, the Diamondbacks added him to their 40-man roster.
