Graham Thorpe Health Status Update

Graham Thorpe

Graham Thorpe is a former English cricketer who played for England internationally and Surrey domestically.

As England’s most complete batsman since the Gooch-Gower era, Graham Thorpe made a name for himself over the winter of 2000-01 by showing he could bat like Alec Stewart, face pace or spin, and defend like Mike Atherton.

A terrific left-handed counterattacker who came off the ropes early in his inning to punch a rapid 20 and gain the initiative was a vital quality for him to have at the start of his career.

After 10 years of consecutive traveling, for both England A and Test teams, his back began to swell and dull his edge; he was also known for being grumpy.

It looked like the penultimate step to fulfillment when he decided to forego a tour of South Africa in 1999 and 2000.

After a well-earned winter break and some quality family time, he emerged as a more mature hitter who relished the game, the team’s greatest all-around fielder, and a valuable member of the locker room and even an occasional captain.

In 2002, however, his professional life took a turn for the worst when his marriage fell apart in front of the cameras.
