After a lengthy and illustrious career as a player, Thorpe first joined the England set-up as a batting coach in 2010.
Thorpe played 100 Tests between 1993 and 2005, averaging 43 and scoring 6,744 runs.
He hit 16 hundred, including an unbroken 200 against New Zealand in a Test match.
However, he retired from international cricket after being replaced by Kevin Pieterson for the 2005 Ashes, a move that selector David Graveney called “the most difficult decision that I have been a part of in my time as a selector.”
Thorpe also played in the 1996 and 1999 World Cups and scored 2,380 runs in 82 ODI games.
He also played 341 times for Surrey in first-class cricket, scoring 21,937 runs in the process.
