During the 2014 season, pitcher Robbie Ray made his MLB debut. In 2010, the Washington Nationals selected him as an amateur draft pick in the 12th round.
Ray turned down a scholarship to the University of Arkansas in order to sign with the team. He appeared in only one game in his rookie season, pitching a perfect inning for the Vermont Lake Monsters of the New York-Penn League.
When he was assigned to the SAL’s Hagerstown Suns in 2011, he went 2-3, 3.13 with 95 strikeouts in 89 innings of work.
In 2012, he was promoted to the Potomac Nationals of the Carolina League, where he threw 105 2/3 innings and gave up 122 hits and 85 runs with a 4.12 ERA.
When it came to wins and losses, he was tied for second in the league. The Nationals lost against him five times more than Tanner Roark, who was second on the team in defeats.
Among the Nationals’ prospects, he was ranked as the team’s No. 18.
This time he did considerably better when he returned to Potomac to begin 2013. On the 5th of July, he was promoted to the AA Harrisburg Senators with a 6-3, 3.11 record after 16 starts.
With Potomac’s 2012 season ending with just 86 strikeouts, he was transferred to the Eastern League with 100 in just 84 innings.
