Sergio Francisco Romo is a pitcher who currently plays for the Toronto Blue Jays. As a pitcher, Romo has played for the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins, Minnesota Twins, Oakland A’s, and Seattle Mariners before joining the Blue Jays
Romo grew up a Dodgers fan in Brawley, California. Romo attended four colleges before being picked by the Giants in the 28th round of the 2005 draft. He made his major league debut in 2008 and played 45 games for the Giants in 2009.
As the Giants won the World Series in 2010, he became the setup man for closer Brian Wilson. He had a 1.50 earned run average (ERA) in 2011, then became the Giants’ closer in 2012, getting three saves as the Giants won the World Series.
Romo was selected as an All-Star in 2013. He lost the position of being the closer the following year but still won his third World Series ring when the Giants defeated the Kansas City Royals in the 2014 World Series.
Romo signed with the Dodgers for 2017 after spending two more seasons with the Giants. In 2018, he was designated for assignment and transferred to the Rays.
He was the first pitcher utilized by Rays manager Kevin Cash as part of Tampa Bay’s opener plan in 2018. Later that year, he was promoted to closer for Tampa Bay.
After becoming a free agent following the season, he signed with the Marlins and served as the team’s closer until being dealt to the Twins halfway through the season. In 2019 and 2020, he made the playoffs with Minnesota before becoming a free agent once more.
