Paul Stanton Sewald (born May 26, 1990) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who pitches for the Seattle Mariners.
He was a member of the New York Mets in Major League Baseball. Sewald was a member of the San Diego Toreros baseball team during his time at the University of San Diego.
In the tenth round of the 2012 MLB draft, the New York Mets selected Sewald. A $1,000 signing bonus was offered to him.
Sewald signed with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League and made his professional debut the following season, going 0–2 with a 1.88 ERA in 28.2 relief innings pitched.
In 35 bullpen appearances for the Savannah Sand Gnats of the Class A South Atlantic League in 2013, he was 3–2 with a 1.77 ERA.
Sewald joined the Seattle Mariners organization as a minor league player on January 7, 2021. Sewald joined the active roster on May 13, 2021. Sewald’s better pitch use helped him have a breakout season with the Mariners.
Brandon Gustafson of 710 ESPN Seattle called him “a force” and “the biggest surprise star” in Seattle’s bullpen in an article.
In an interview with the broadcaster, Sewald stated that he had outperformed even himself. In 2021, Sewald had a 10–3 record, a 3.06 ERA, and struck out 104 batters in 62 games and 64.2 innings.
