He pitched for the rookie-level Orem Owlz in 2011 before being promoted to the Cedar Rapids Kernels the following year, when he appeared in eight games. As a result of elbow reconstructive surgery, he only pitched in three games in 2013.

The Indians summoned Clevinger up on May 18, 2016, and he made his main league debut that night. After three starts, he was demoted to the minors and spent the next three months with the Columbus Clippers. Clevinger concluded his time with Columbus with a 3.00 ERA and 11 victories. On August 4, 2016, he was called back up to start against the Minnesota Twins.

On November 15, 2020, a 2-year contract extension was agreed upon by Clevinger and the Padres, with annual salaries of $2 million in 2021 and $6.5 million in 2022, with a $3 million signing bonus. On the same day, it was announced that Clevinger would need to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the 2021 season. On February 18, 2021, Clevinger was placed on the 60-day injured list as he continued to recover from Tommy John surgery.
