Blake Ashton Snell (born December 4, 1992) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres.
He debuted in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016 and won the American League (AL) Cy Young Award in 2018 when he was an All-Star and led the league in both wins and earned run average (ERA).
Snell was taken in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.
He signed with the Rays and debuted with the Gulf Coast Rays, where he went 12–2 with a 3.08 ERA in 11 games (eight starts).
He pitched for the Princeton Rays in 2012, going 5–1 with a 2.09 ERA in 11 starts, and the Bowling Green Hot Rods in 2013, going 4–9 with a 4.27 ERA in 23 starts.
The Rays traded Snell to the San Diego Padres on December 29, 2020 in exchange for prospects Luis Patino, Blake Hunt, and Cole Wilcox, as well as catcher Francisco Meja.
Snell was the Padres’ number two pitcher. In 2021, Snell regressed a bit, finishing with a 7-6 record and a 4.20 ERA in 27 starts.
Snell missed two starts this summer due to food sickness.
Due to discomfort in his left adductor, he had to leave his September 12 start early. He was placed in the IL the next day, and he was never seen again.
