The woman whose charming baby photo became the iconic face of Gerber baby food over nine decades ago has died.
“Gerber is very grieved by the departure of Ann Turner Cook, the original Gerber infant, whose face was sketched into the renowned Gerber emblem more than 90 years ago,” the company said on Instagram on Friday.
“Many years before she became a wonderful mother, teacher, and writer, her grin and expressive curiosity captured hearts all around the world and will live on as a symbol for all newborns.” We send our heartfelt condolences to Ann’s family and everybody who knew her.”
Cook, who eventually went on to become a teacher and novelist, was 95 years old when he died. In 1928, a neighbor submitted a sketch of her to Gerber in response to an open request for faces to represent a new advertising campaign.
During a 2013 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Cook claimed, “When mum pointed to a baby food jar and said it was my picture, I was probably about 3 years old.” “I thought it was a very nice gesture.”
