After being picked in the Rule 5 Draft by the Seattle Mariners, Lucas Luetge made his major league debut in 2012.
Lucas was an All-State pitcher as a college senior, going 8-3 with a 0.58 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 72 innings. He was selected in the 31st round of the amateur draft by the Chicago White Sox in 2005, but he did not sign.
In 2006-2007, he went on to junior college and posted an 11-3, 3.56 record. He was taken in the 18th round of the 2006 amateur draft by the White Sox, but he did not sign. Luetge was 1-0 with a save and a 6.16 ERA after transferring to Rice in 2008.
He struck out 38 batters in 30 2/3 innings, but his ERA was the third-worst on the Rice staff. He was selected in the 18th round of the amateur draft by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008. Brian Sankey was the scout.
Luetge divided his 2008 summer between the Helena Brewers (4-0, 5 H, 13 K in 14 IP) and the West Virginia Power (4-0, 5 H, 13 K in 14 IP) (2-1, 3.72).
He pitched for the Brevard County Manatees in 2009, going 6-7 with two saves and a 4.48 ERA. He divided time between the Manatees (1-1, 2.29 in 16 G) and the Huntsville Stars the following season (3-2, 3.48 in 23 G).
He went 1-3 with three saves and a 3.13 ERA for Huntsville in 2011, striking 69 batters in 69 innings. In 103 at-bats, he kept lefties to a .175 average with no home runs and 32 strikeouts.
Even though he had never pitched in AAA, the Seattle Mariners selected him in the 2011 Rule 5 Draft. After Rhiner Cruz and Terry Doyle, he was the third pick in the draft.
