He led all major league pitchers for the second year in a row with an average fastball velocity of 97.6 mph. In the 2018 American League Wild Card Game, Severino got things going.
A club option for a fifth season for an additional $12.25 million was included in Severino’s four-year, $40 million contract deal that he signed on February 15, 2019.

On April 9, it was disclosed that Severino had been given a Grade 2 lat strain diagnosis, which would have kept him out for an extra six weeks.
It wasn’t until September that he participated in any rehab assignments. On September 17, 2019, he made his first start with the Yankees against the Los Angeles Angels in New York.
He went on to make two more starts throughout the regular season.
