Hicks lived in Compton, California, and joined Woodrow Wilson Classical High School, where he excelled in baseball. He also participated in Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Urban Youth Academy, which was created to promote baseball in urban areas.

Aaron, a switch hitter, was recruited in the first round of the 2008 MLB draft by the Minnesota Twins out of Wilson Classical High School in Long Beach, California.

Hicks was named a 2008 Baseball America Rookie All-Star and the Twins’ top prospect in his first professional season.

He batted .318 for the Gulf Coast League Twins, with four home runs, 27 runs batted in, twelve stolen bases, and 28 walks, earning him a spot on the Gulf Coast League postseason All-Star team.

Hicks batted .251 for the Beloit Snappers in 2009, with four home runs, 29 RBIs, ten steals, and 40 walks. In 2010, he returned to Beloit and hit .279 with eight home runs.

In 2011, he hit .242 with five home runs for the Fort Myers Miracle. He hit.286 with 13 home runs for the New Britain Rock Cats in 2012. After being demoted from the major leagues in August, he batted.222 with the Rochester Red Wings in 2013.

Baseball America ranked Aaron as a top 100 prospect four times.
