During the 2009 season, Archer pitched for the Peoria Chiefs of the Class A Midwest League. He went 6-4, had a 2.81 ERA, 119 strikeouts (sixth in the league), led the league with 66 walks, and did not allow any home runs.
In 142.1 innings pitched for the Tennessee Smokies of the Class AA Southern League and the Daytona Cubs of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League in 2010, Archer had a 15-3 record, a 2.34 earned run average (ERA), and 149 strikeouts.
