Joseph Michael Smith, born March 22, 1984, is a Minnesota Twins pitcher (MLB). He played for the Mets, Indians, Angels, Cubs, Blue Jays, Astros, and Mariners. Smith was picked in the third round of the 2006 MLB draft by the Mets. He debuted in 2007
Smith threw for the American Amateur Baseball Congress Midland squad in Cincinnati for five years. He was a three-year varsity letterman at Amelia High School and a Division I All-Fort Ancient Valley Conference honoree. He was determined to play baseball after labrum surgery.
In college, he redshirted and played three years in the Horizon League. After adjusting his delivery, Smith became Wright State’s closer his junior and senior years. The senior had 13 saves and a 0.98 ERA.
Smith had 22 saves, 145 Ks, and 39 walks in three seasons. In 2005, he was WSU’s MVP; in 2006, he was second-team All-Mideast Region, first-team Horizon League, and Horizon League Pitcher of the Year.
Smith began his career with Brooklyn (A) of the New York–Penn League on June 21, surrendering two runs, one earned. Baseball America ranked him among the top 20 NYPL prospects. Omar Minaya pondered recalling Smith after Duaner Sánchez was harmed in a taxi cab accident in 2006. Instead of promoting Smith, the Mets traded for Roberto Hernández and liver Pérez.
