Max Kepler made his Bundesliga-1 debut with the Buchbinder Legionäre when he was 15 years old in 2008, hitting .185/.333/.185 in 14 games as a reserve outfielder.

That year, he was a member of the Major League Baseball European Academy. In 2009, he went 8 for 20 with four walks, three stolen bases, two doubles, and eight runs.

His American mother and Polish father were both ballet dancers, and they enrolled him in a bilingual school in Berlin where he began playing baseball in elementary school.

His passion for baseball was fueled by frequent summer vacations to the United States, where he continued to play even though all of his friends were playing soccer and baseball facilities were run-down.

In July 2009, scout Howard Norsetter signed Kepler-Rozycki to a deal with the Minnesota Twins.

Baseball America reported that he might have surpassed Alexander Smit’s European signing bonus record of $800,000; however, the bonus was ultimately verified to be $775,000, barely shy of the record-breaking sum.

After Tim Henkenjohann and Rodney Gessmann, he was the third German to join with the Twins franchise. Kepler-Rozycki suffered a foot injury in July 2009, and as a result, he was unable to compete in the European Junior Championship.

In September, he enrolled at Fort Myers Senior High School, which is located across the street from the Twins’ Florida facility.
