The Houston Astros selected pitcher Adrian Houser in the second round of the amateur draft in 2011 out of an Oklahoma high school. Jim Stevenson acted as a scout.
While leading his team to the state championship, he went 9-1 with a 0.76 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 62 innings, while also hitting.487. After college outfielder George Springer, he was Houston’s second round pick.
He promptly turned pro, pitching for the Greeneville Astros and the GCL Astros in 2011, going 2-4 with a 4.31 ERA in 12 games as a starter. Greeneville re-signed him in 2012, and he went 3-4 with a 4.19 ERA in 11 starts.
In 2013, he was promoted to the New York-Penn League’s Tri-City ValleyCats, where he had a 14-game record of 0-4, 3.42.
In 2014, he made his first full-season appearance with the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Class A Midwest League, appearing in 25 games, 17 of which he started, and pitching 108 2/3 innings. His 5-6 record and 4.14 ERA were ordinary, but his 93/37 K/W ratio was a strong indicator of future success.
The California League’s Lancaster JetHawks put him to the test in 2015, sending him to an extremely difficult environment for pitchers. In 12 games, he was 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA, pitching two-thirds of the time as a starter and the rest as a long reliever.
On June 22nd, he was promoted to the AA Corpus Christi Hooks, continuing his steady but unspectacular upward trajectory.
