When Was Brandon Woodruff Drafted?

Brandon Woodruff debuted in the major leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers in late 2017, going 2-3 with a 4.81 ERA in eight starts.

In 19 games, including four starts, he was 3-0 with a 3.61 ERA. Despite bouncing back and forth between the majors and minors throughout the season, he was outstanding after being called up in September, posting an ERA of 0.73.

This most certainly affected manager Craig Counsell’s decision to have him start Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Colorado Rockies on October 4th, despite the fact that it was a bullpen game.

He was outstanding, pitching three hitless and scoreless innings to lead the Brewers to a 3-2 victory. His next appearance was in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the top of the third, he replaced Gio Gonzalez and pitched a 1-2-3 inning before hitting a game-winning home run against Clayton Kershaw to electrify the Miller Park crowd and the entire club.

The ball was hit to center field and easily cleared the fence, so it wasn’t a cheap shot. He followed up by striking out the side in the fourth inning to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.

He was credited with a 6-5 victory for Milwaukee, a fitting reward for his superb two-way performance.

Woodruff had hit a home run earlier in the season, and more crucially, he had hit one in AA in 2016, in his first game back after attending the funeral of his elder brother Blake, who had died in an ATV accident.

He was a two-way player at Mississippi State University all through college and he still knew how to swing a dangerous bat.
