On June 13, 2011, Bass made his major league debut, tossing a five-inning start and securing his first major league victory. Seth Smith was the first batter he struck out in a Major League game.
The following day, he was optioned back to San Antonio, but in late June, he was brought up once more.
Bass continued to throw for the major league team the rest of the season, making two additional starts in late September while working out of the bullpen.
In 4813 innings with 24 strikeouts and 21 walks, he had a 1.68 ERA at the end of 2011. When Dustin Moseley hurt his shoulder on April 12, Bass was moved from the Padres’ bullpen to the team’s starting rotation.
Before being placed on the disabled list in June due to shoulder irritation, Bass made 14 starts for the team.
After making three rehab starts with Tucson, he returned to the team in September and began pitching out of the bullpen.
In 97 innings of work, Bass finished the year with a 2-8 record, a 4.73 ERA, 80 strikeouts, and 39 walks.
Bass was dealt to the Houston Astros on December 11, 2013, along with a player to be named later or cash considerations, for the player to be named later or cash considerations.
The following day, the Astros traded Patrick Schuster to the Padres. Bass’s 2014 campaign was split between the Astros and Oklahoma City RedHawks, the team’s Class AAA affiliate.
He played in 21 games for the main leagues and recorded two saves. On November 20, 2014, he was officially removed from the Astros’ roster. Bass chose free agency on December 6.
