Pablo López of the Miami Marlins was removed from a game against the Atlanta Braves on July 2, 2021, after throwing just one pitch.
Andy Fletcher, the home plate umpire, took issue with the pitch because it was directly directed at Ronald Acuna, the Braves’ leadoff hitter.
The most recent starting pitcher to meet this disgraceful end was also a Marlins player, Jose Urena, who was booted from the game on August 15, 2018, also for aiming his opening pitch at Acuna.
In any case, Acuna came around to score what ended up being the game’s lone run, earning Lopez the loss for his single pitch.
He gained attention once more on July 11th, but this time for good reasons after striking out his first nine batters in a start against the Braves.
Jim Deshaies, Jacob deGrom, and German Marquez were the last pitchers to start a game with eight strikeouts each. Amazingly, he only had 35 pitches to complete the feat.
To start the fourth inning, Ehire Adrianza grounded out, breaking the streak.
Prior to making it to the major leagues, López, who was originally signed by the Seattle Mariners in 2012, was traded to the Marlins on July 20, 2017, along with three other minor leaguers, for pitcher David Phelps.
On June 30, 2018, just over a year after that, he made it to the majors. He made 10 starts in his rookie campaign and had a 2-4, 4.14 ERA record. In 2019, he had a 5-8 record and a 5.09 ERA.
