Soler was expected to be a key member of the Royals’ lineup in 2017, but he strained an oblique muscle during a minor league game on March 26th, forcing him to miss the start of the season.
He only appeared in 35 games, batting .244 with two home runs and six RBIs. He improved slightly in 2018, although his season was cut short at 65 games.
At the very least, he was effective when he was able to play, with an OPS+ of 123 and a slugging percentage of .542 thanks to 18 doubles and 9 home runs.
Still, he was a bit of a forgotten guy as the season began, and with the Royals not expected to compete, he flew under the radar when he shattered Mike Moustakas’ single-season home run record of 38.
By the end of August, he had tied his previous high, and by September 3rd, he had surpassed it. In the game, he also became the first Royal since Eric Hosmer in 2016 to reach 100 RBIs.
The following day, he hit 40 homers. He hit 48 home runs to lead the league, and he was one of just four players in the circuit to play in all 162 games.
He batted .265 with 117 RBIs, but he also struck out the most batters in the league with 178.
