Aaron Christopher Loup is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Los Angeles Angels.
He has played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, and New York Mets in the Major League Baseball (MLB).
Loup, who was born in Raceland, Louisiana, attended Hahnville High School and Tulane University, where he led his teams to three state tournament berths and a five-hit shutout.
The Blue Jays selected him in the ninth round of the 2009 draft out of Tulane University.
Loup was called up to the Blue Jays as a substitute for Luis Pérez after pitching for the Blue Jays’ minor-league clubs for three years and was selected for the 2012 Eastern League All-Star Game.
He retired all six batters he faced. Later, the Toronto chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America named him Rookie of the Year for the 2012 Toronto Blue Jays (BBWAA).
On Opening Day of 2013, Loup pitched 113 innings and won his first major league game against the Detroit Tigers on April 10.
On April 12 and June 2, he collected his first two major league saves, and on June 8, he guided the Blue Jays to a win in an 18-inning game after a pair of groundouts.
Loup is a southpaw whose pitching improved dramatically after coaches advised him to switch to a sidearm pitching style.
His fastball has been praised for its effectiveness against both left and right-handed batters, but he has struggled with his changeup.
Manager John Gibbons sees Loup as a “situational, one-inning guy,” rather than a long reliever.
He is recognized for his “calm” demeanor, which has improved after he spent time with his teammates.
