The Royals of Kansas City are a professional baseball team headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. The Royals are a part of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Central Division. The team was created in 1969 as an expansion franchise and has appeared in four World Series, having won in 1985 and 2015 and defeating in 1980 and 2014.
The franchise was founded in 1969 by pharmaceutical executive Ewing Kauffman as a result of the Athletics’ relocation to Oakland. They immediately established themselves as a formidable team, posting an 85–76 win-loss record in their third season.
By 1976, the young squad had established itself as the American League West’s dominant force, winning 90 games or more in four straight seasons from 1975 to 1978.

Throughout the mid-1990s, the team remained competitive before going on a long losing streak. The team only had two winning seasons between 1995 and 2013, in 2003 and 2013.
The Royals did not qualify for the Major League Baseball postseason for 28 consecutive seasons, from the 1985 World Series championship to 2014, one of the longest dry spells in the expanded wild-card era of baseball.
From 2002 to 2006, the very worst years of this period were from 2002 to 2006, when the Royals had four of their five seasons end in a 100-loss season. The team faced some level of devastation.
