Whitley attended San Antonio, Texas‘ Alamo Heights High School. He was a member of the 18U National Team that won the World Cup the summer before his senior year. During his senior year, Whitley threw a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in a single game.
Whitley was chosen by the Houston Astros with the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He had made a commitment to play collegiate baseball at Florida State University, but he ultimately chose to sign with the Astros.
