Dillon Thomas, a corner outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels, has been claimed off waivers by the Houston Astros.
Opening up a spot on the 40-man roster, outfielder Jake Meyers was moved from the 10-day to the 60-day injury list, allowing him to return to the team.
In addition, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced that relief pitcher Ty Buttrey had passed waivers and was transferred to Salt Lake.
Thomas will continue to play in the AL West, where he hopes to make it to the big leagues with a third different organization.
The 29-year-old has featured in just five games for the Mariners and the Angels over the past two seasons. He just stayed in Anaheim for a few days.
Thomas was called up to the majors on Wednesday when the team was dealing with Mike Trout’s brief absence. Before being sent to the practice squad, he played in one game while on the main roster.
Over the winter, he was signed by the Halos to a minor league deal and earned a position on the team’s 40-man roster. With eight home runs in 211 plate appearances for Salt Lake, the left-handed bat compiled a .295/.398/.489 slash line.
The Astros’ management office was supposedly impressed by Thomas’ impressive 10.9 percent walk rate compared to his 23.7 percent strikeout rate.
While Thomas will begin his time with the Astros organization in Sugar Land, the chance to play in the major leagues with the Astros is sure to be a sweet one.
Thomas is a native Houstonian who signed with the Rockies 10 years ago out of Westbury Christian School with a commitment to Texas A&M.
He still has two minor league option years left, so if he can hold down a 40-man roster slot, he can bounce between Houston and Sugar Land for the foreseeable future.
