Alex Colome is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for the Colorado Rockies of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Colomé was an amateur free agent in March 2007 when he signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. On November 18, 2011, the Rays included him in their 40-man roster.
On May 29, 2013, the Rays called up Colomé to the major leagues. He appeared in three games and had a 2.25 earned run average in each of them (ERA). Colomé was suspended for 50 games on March 24, 2014, after he failed a random drug test.
Colome finished the season with a 2-0 record and a 2.66 ERA in five appearances, three of them starting. It was in the bullpen that Colomé saw his first major playing time in 2015, making 43 appearances and posting an impressive 3.94 ERA. As a result of an injury to Brad Boxberger in 2016, Colomé was appointed the Rays’ full-time closer.
That’s how he played it all along. His 1.91 ERA and 37 saves ranked him fourth in the American League at the end of the season. In addition, Colome was selected to play in his first career All-Star game.
