Kirby Kali Yates is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Atlanta Braves. He has played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees, and San Diego Padres in the Major League Baseball (MLB).
Yates was picked in the 26th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball draft by the Boston Red Sox out of Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii.
He didn’t sign and went to Yavapai College instead. Tommy John surgery kept him out of the 2006 and 2007 seasons.
Yates signed with the Tampa Bay Rays after going undrafted in 2009. Yates pitched for the Montgomery Biscuits in Double-A in 2012, posting a 2.65 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched across 50 games.
Yates was a Triple-A All-Star in 2013, pitching 51 games for the Durham Bulls and posting a 1.90 ERA.
On November 20, 2013, Yates was added to the Rays’ 40-man roster. Yates made his major league debut on June 7, 2014, after being called up for the first time.
In 37 innings pitched, he had a 3.75 ERA while striking out 42 batters.
He struggled the next season, posting an ERA of 7.97 in 20+13 innings for the Major League team while bouncing between Tampa and Durham. After the 2015 season, the Rays designated Yates for assignment.
