Major League Baseball handed out a retroactive 20-game suspension to Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna on Monday for his role in a domestic altercation with his wife, Genesis Guzman.
From the time he was placed on administrative leave on Sept. 10 to the completion of the regular season, he was suspended for 20 games.
Guzman informed police that he choked Ozuna and held her against a wall after an argument, and Ozuna was arrested on May 29.
He was originally charged with felony aggravated assault by strangulation.
In July, that accusation was dismissed, and Ozuna was instead charged with misdemeanor domestic violence battery and simple assault.
He was placed in a diversion program in September, which could lead to the discharge of all charges if he follows the terms of the negotiated settlement and completes all of the program’s obligations.
The Braves issued a statement saying, “Any incidence of domestic abuse is reprehensible, and we fully support the Commissioner’s Office’s decision involving Marcell.
” Marcell has accepted full responsibility for his mistakes and is taking the required steps to learn and develop from the circumstance, which gives us hope.”
