Ryan was born to Jason and Sherry Helsley on July 18, 1994, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma in the USA. He played baseball when he attended high school at Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. After he was undrafted out of high school during the 2013 MLB draft, he got enrolled at Northeastern State University where he played college baseball for the baseball team.
During his freshman year in 2014, he was named the MIAA Freshman of the Year. When he completed his sophomore year, he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth round of the 2015 MLB draft. He signed with them and made his professional debut that year with the Johnson City Cardinals.
He spent his 2016 playing for the Peoria Chiefs where he was named a Midwest League All-Star that season. He played with the Palm Beach Cardinals in 2017 and 2018, he was first assigned to play with Springfield and was promoted during the season to play with the Memphis Redbirds.
The Cardinals added him to their 40-man roster at the end of the 2018 season. In 2019, he returned to play for the Memphis and on April 16 that year, he was called to the major leagues for the first time and he made his debut that day for the Cardinals.
