Steven was born on May 29, 1991, in Stony Brook, New York in the USA. He played high school baseball at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, New York. He completed high school in 2009 and was drafted by the New York Mets in the 2nd round of the 2009 MLB draft. He was paid a signing bonus of $895,000.
He made his professional debut in 2012 after the Mets assigned him to play for the Kingsport Mets of the Rookie-level Appalachian League.
