Fernando “Ferdie” Pacheco, M.D. (December 8, 1927 – November 16, 2017) was Muhammad Ali’s personal physician and cornerman. He also worked with a number of other boxing champions.
Pacheco, dubbed “the Fight Doctor” in popular culture, departed Ali’s staff in the fall of 1977 when Ali failed a series of physical reflex tests, prompting Ali to reject Pacheco’s medical suggestion to retire.
Pacheco was a well-known boxing analyst for numerous television networks, including NBC and Showtime, over the following two decades. He also became a self-taught painter and novelist, with most of his works focusing on his boxing career and his boyhood in Tampa’s Ybor City area.
Pacheco established a medical business in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood as a young physician. He used to go to boxing shows organized by local promoter Chris Dundee in the late 1950s.
Pacheco was introduced to Angelo Dundee, the promoter’s brother and the owner of the 5th Street Gym, one night after a fight show. Angelo Dundee offered the doctor free tickets to games if he would “help sew up my fighters,” marking the start of an enduring association.
