Juan Yepez, the Cardinals’ No. 6 prospect, will join the team in Kansas City to take the position of shortstop Edmundo Sosa.
Sosa was placed on the 10-day disabled list by the Cardinals, according to MLB.com Cardinals reporter John Denton.
During a Tuesday afternoon game for the Cardinals Triple-A affiliate in Memphis, Yepez smashed his ninth home run of the season.
His 26 RBIs are the most on the squad. With 11 home runs, only top prospect Nolan Gorman has more for the Memphis Redbirds.
Yepez has been called up to the Cardinals’ big-league roster for the second time. He was on the bench for the Cardinals’ loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2021 Wild Card game, but he never played.
The Cardinals acquired Yepez in a 2017 trade with the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Matt Adams and monetary considerations.
In the Cardinals organization, he was in MLB.com’s top 30 prospects list in 2020 and 2021 before breaking into the top 10 for the 2022 season.
